A Systematic Review of Experimental Approaches on Public Service Motivation

Recent studies on public service motivation (PSM) have increasingly adopted experimental approaches. This article provides a systematic review of the existing PSM and suggests guidance for future research. We assess literature based two criteria that differentiate methods from observational ones: whether is measured through an experiment research design operates treatment intervention PSM. After reviewing sample 26 published studies, we find only one study met both criteria. Most measure self-reported survey lack effects, making it difficult to them studies. Furthermore, external validity remains concern, as most use students proxies civil servants or focus Western states. conclude remain at nascent stage with much room improvement, especially design.
